Spelling & Word Study Resources
Proven effective. SPELL/SPELL-Links has been proven effective in a variety of settings and across different student populations.

ASHA (2009)
The Spelling Sensitivity Score (SSS), based on the SPELL/SPELL-Links multiple-linguistic word study approach, represents what children's spellings reveal about their word study knowledge and captures developmental changes in children's literacy performance. Data based on 4,229 spellings indicate that weighted SSS scores distinguished between performance among students in grades 1 through 6.

Criterion Validity of SPELL (2006)
The criterion validity of SPELL spelling assessment software is established by its significant correlation with the Test of Written Spelling - 4 and the Woodcock Diagnostic Reading Battery.

ASHA (2005)
This study documents the benefits of using the SPELL assessment to tailor word study instruction to a student's specific needs. Orthographic instructional goals for 5th grade students were based on each student's spelling performance, as indicated by Spelling Evaluation for Language and Literacy (SPELL), and word study activities were taken from SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing.

Communication Disorders Quarterly (2004)
Fourth grade student shows significant gains in spelling and decoding skills after receiving the SPELL assessment and nine weeks of word study intervention using the instructional methods of the SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing word study curriculum.

Proven approach.
Current best practices for teaching spelling and reading are documented in a large and rapidly growing body of research conducted by the leading experts in our field.

Why Spelling is Important and How to Teach it Effectively (2008)

Dr. Virginia Berninger, Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Washington, highlights the relationship between spelling, reading, and writing, summarizes key word study research, and describes current best practices for word study. Dr. Berninger cites SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing as an evidence-based instructional tool for explicit spelling word study instruction.

What do Spelling Errors Tell Us About Language Knowledge? (2007)
Learn how a deficit in any one area of word study knowledge - phonological awareness, knowledge of orthography, vocabulary, morphological and semantic relationships, and mental orthographic images - will manifest as a specific pattern of misspelling in a student's writing and how spelling error analysis can be used to identify precisely which deficits are interfering with the student’s ability to read and spell.

Improving Written Language Using A Spelling Word Study Approach (2010)
Learn the importance of integrating multiple linguistic processes within spelling instruction. The research shows multiple-linguistic spelling word study instruction to be more effective than traditional classroom instruction for improving spelling and reading.
